Truly historic news: Bansko's code deciphered

It is long known that Bansko has its own spoken language, quite different from official Bulgarian. But only few knew that a secret alphabet existed, and helped the town prosper in the era of  National Revival. Two centuries later, the cipher was decoded, ironically by a descendant of Paisius of Hilendar. After 5-year efforts Svetlana Diakonova announced the historic news in front of “Bansko Tomorrow”.
„I knew for a long time about this secret cipher that Bansko merchants used for communication in the beginning of 19-th century. I started collecting their letters and notebooks and discovered their own alphabet, mixing Bulgarian and Greek letters in Gothic font. К. The mess was complicated   because the Old German letters were used for different sounds“, says Diakonova, whose job is in economics.
Finally she deciphered a letter to Neofit Rilski from his brother-in-law Marko Veziov, dated 1832. „I got one sentence and started guessing letter by letter, word by word. First was „a“, then „i“, then „о“. An expert probably would've done better, but I managed to decipher it, too“, says Diakonova, who is happy with the end result.
It's interesting that Neofit Rilski, who left Bansko very young, also knew the secret alphabet. He used another code system for his letters to Zahari Zograf.
